Obituary of Barb Steffen
Barbara R. (Wurtz) Steffen, age 75, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 2, 2019 at her residence surrounded by family. Honorary urn bearers will be Haley Kuchta, Hanna Haro, Christian Haro, Brianna Haro, Isabela Haro, Sophia Haro, Antonia Montoya, Michael Montoya, MacKenzie Haro, Tabor Haro, and Dane Haro.
Barb was born on May 9, 1943 on a rural Yankton County farm and grew up on the family farm. She attended Yankton County Rural Elementary and Tabor High School, graduating in 1960.
On April 28,1962 she married Richard R. Haro and they had the joy of having 5 children together but parted later as good friends.
On January 18, 1986 she married Walter (Wally) Steffen who she enjoyed fishing for salmon with until his passing.
Later she met a lifelong loving companion, James (Jim) Slate, who she enjoyed over 30 years of joy and love, fishing, camping and traveling.
She was the best friend to all her children, loving and forgiving.
Welcomed in her heart and home all her step children: Janet, Troy, Ron, Shawn, Trevor, Shannon, Tiffany, & Tyler.
Barbara worked as an accountant/bookkeeping as her profession for Sears, in the trucking industry, and retired from KYNT/KK93.
In her retirement years she enjoyed gardening, canning, puzzles, & reading.
Barbara is survived by her lifetime companion, Jim Slate; her children: Terri (Vern) Cash, Mike (Amanda Chabane) Haro, Steve (Heidi) Haro, Julie (Tim) Camp, Jeff (Lori) Haro; sisters: Dorothy Perk & Susan (Joe) Pechous; her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and great grandchildren.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Anatasia ‘Stella’ (Capp) Wurtz; sister, Maryanne (Wurtz) Schoenberger; brother, Lawrence (Larry) Wurtz; daughter in law, Terryll (Deam) Haro.
